Destino 2014: Malasia

Two countries in one

Malaysia is like two countries in one divided by the half for the sea of the Southern China. His multicultural peninsula agglutinates Malay, Chinese and Indian influences, whereas Borneo presumes of jungles with orangutans, beaks of granite and remote tribes. All over the country is observed an impressive variety of microcosm that it includes from the skyscrapers of the capital, Kuala Lumpur, up to Sarawak’s intimate longhouses. Then there is his gastronomy, considered one of the most diverse of the world, especially that of the coast peninsular west, which includes the food monya ycurries Indians, besides Chinese buffets, Malay stands of food and even a good western offer.

Money: The big populations have cash dispensers all over. With the goods of daily consumption it is not in the habit of haggling, but it is a common practice at the moment of buying souvenirs, antiquities or other tourist articles, without mattering that they have a price. The rates in the transport normally are stipulated, but when it is a question of trishaws and taxis, it will be necessary to negotiate. It is not usually to give tips.

Health: About health and the quality of the sanitary infrastructures change very much depending on the zone of the Southeast Asia. Opposite to the logical worry about whom they think to visit tropical countries of contracting infectious diseases, it is necessary to clarify that this risk strange is translated in medical serious problems. Rather they are the accidents of traffic and the preexisting diseases the principal sanitary contingencies. The contagion of rabies persists in Malaysia, for what it is necessary to take very seriously any bite of animal. The leeches can be an inconvenience in the treks for the jungle if it has rained very much.

Security: In general, Malaysia is very sure and the assaults with violence are rare. Nevertheless, they must follow the habitual precautions for the travelers, since avoid to walk in solitarily for sordid zones by night. The frauds with the credit cards are turning into a problem, they must be used in known establishments and never facilitate the password. The pulls from motorcycles are habitual in Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru and Georgetown (Penang), so that in those cities it is not necessary to take anything hanging of the side of the causeway.

Taxi: If you prefer taking a taxi to get to your destination, you will have to buy a few coupons in the airport. KL Sentral*: It is the principal station of KL’s trains and from there it is possible to connect with the meter, buses, monorraíl, light rail transit, trains and taxis.

SHIP: There are no services of ferry between the Malaysian Borneo and the peninsula. To local level there are ships and ferries between the peninsula and the deep-sea islands and for the rivers of Sabah and Sarawak. If a ship seems to be overloaded or slightly sure it’s better to remain in land.

BUS: The peninsular Malaysia has an excellent service of buses. In the biggest populations there are several bus stations. The local and regional services often operate from a station and those of crossed length, from other one; in other cases for example, that of Kuala Lumpur, the bus stations differ for the destinations that offer.

HITCH-HIKING: Malaysia always has had good reputation for doing hitch-hiking. To do hitch-hiking on the coast west is very simple, but not always it is possible in the lebuhraya principal (roads). On the east coast, the traffic is minor and can happen enough time between a Samaritan and the following one. Evidently, to do hitch-hiking is never sure completely and his practice is never advisable.

LOCAL TRANSPORT: The local transport changes, but always there are buses and taxis. A few populations of peninsular Malaysia also have trishaws, but in general they are almost disappeared. The best cities to enjoy a walk in trishaw are Georgetown and Malaca. In the principal populations of the Malaysian Borneo you can take  taxis, buses and minibuses. Nevertheless, out of them, the traveler remains left his luck and it will have to walk or do hitch-hiking. When indeed one is out of the civilization, only there are the fluvial ships, the planes and the long treks for the jungle.

TAXI: The drivers are forced by law to use the taximeter if they have it and it is possible to insist that should used it, though the most frequent thing is to have to negotiate the price before mounting. The taxis of length crossed (or shared) are expensive in comparison with the buses. The first ones are ruled by a system of fixed rates by complete vehicle and, on having travelled between important populations, the possibilities of giving with other passengers ready to share one (without waiting too much time) multiply; in opposite case, the most probable thing is that the traveler pays the complete amount.

TRAIN: There are two principal services of trains: express and locals. The last ones have air conditioning and premier seats (1 ª class), Superior (2 ª class) and sometimes economy (3 ª class). Of similar form, the night trains have compartments premier night deluxe (superior / low berth 50/70 additional MYR), premier night standard (18/26 MYR) and standard night (12/17 MYR). The local services only are in the habit of having economic class, though some of them include Superior seats. The expresses only stop in the master stations, whereas the local ones stop everywhere, even in the middle of the jungle.
